Cheesecake???

Tonight, I went to visit some old friends I haven’t seen in gosh, 10 years, maybe?  It was such a treat to hang out with them, catch up on life and to discover who each other is now in life.  It was even more fun to have learned via facebook that Ben loves to swim, bike, and run.

Within 5 minutes of arriving, he and I were quickly talking about biking and he is showing me his bike and talking race stories and goals and all sorts of things that athletic people talk about when they get together (or so I think anyway).  Maybe it is just what people who share a similar passion talk about when they get together, athletic or not!  Regardless, it was neat to notice how 10 years ago, I would have walked away from a conversation that involved sports of any kind, and here I am not only talking about it, but participating in the events we are talking about!

In fact, I ALMOST got talked into going on a 13 mile bike ride with him tomorrow while he runs…I would have been riding for the first time in a few years, on a bike not quite fitted for me, with his shoes on that go with his clips for his pedals…which I have never used before.  I was almost sold, until he clarified that when he said 6:30, he meant AM, not PM.

Oh.

Ummm

Then, when he realized it has been years since I have ridden, we decided that a 13 mile ride, right out of the gate might not be a good idea!  But we will ride together, sometime, soon.

Anyway, back to the title.  I went over to their house knowing I was already 200 calories over for the day and that I was not working out today either.   This was actually good to know going in.  When they offered me cheesecake, it was soooo much easier to resist.  It also helped that I had already been telling them about some of my journey over the last year or so, and they knew I was re-focusing on weight loss and calories and discipline.

Hmmm imagine that, when armed with the knowledge of the truth of the day (accurate calorie counts), a committment to lose and firm accountability to go with it, and a willingness to be honest about my story even if it feels uncomfortable, I can’t lose.

Cheesecake Kim?

No thanks, I will pass!

Piece of cake!

Between Season’s Summer Challenge Final Results

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As much as I hate to admit it, but summer is drawing to a close.  Here in Michigan, the trees are already beginning to turn colors, the nights are quite cool, and the days are warm, but not hot.  Wait, did we ever get HOT weather this year?

With the end of summer comes the end of our challenge.  You have all persisted for 13 weeks.  Some weeks were rough for many of us.  But we kept going and didn’t give up trying…at least not that I know of.

After 13 weeks, we have a found an ultimate Biggest Loser!  The Loser/Winner for the overall challenge is Lina with an amazing 13.71 % lost!

I assigned each of you a number (that I will email you) and had Aaron use his amazing Excel/data management/analysis skills to make a neat picture for us to see of our progress.  Check it out!  It is kind of neat to see, that while we may not be happy with the literal number on the scale…the trend is downward.  Ultimately, that is what counts.

Congratulations Lina and all for a great summer challenge!

The Downward Trend

I have heard from Matt McNutt, former contestant on The Biggest Loser, that he is planning on running a challenge on his website that will coincide with the next Season of The Biggest Loser.   Check him out at http://www.matthewmcnutt.com for further information when he gets around to posting it.  He usually has a pretty sweet prize package that goes with his challege and a ton more participants.  I know I will be participating!  In fact, it was with his challenge, this time last year that I started anew on my weight loss journey!

Between Season’s Summer Challenge Wk 12 Results

Well folks, this is our last week.  It has been an incredible summer and I have somehow managed to resist the urge to sneak a peek at final results and see who might be in the lead!  I want to be surprised next week with the rest of you!  Anyone who really knows me (ahem Aaron, Adam, Jen, Coach), knows that not peeking is an incredible feat of will power for me!  I like to KNOW!!

Before I get to this weeks results, let me say this.  You guys have all been incredible.  No matter how many pounds you lost, if you stayed in the game and didn’t give up completely, you are winners or umm losers.  Goodness, knows I have lost a ridiculously small amount during this challenge and I am quick to compare myself to others and their losses.  But when I go there, I am quickly reminded of where I started, where I have been, the battles that have been fought and won, and the war that is still going on.   I am quickly reminded that this war is not just about pounds shed but about transforming a life.  Transformation is not overnight.  It takes time and patience.  But more than that it takes forgiveness.  Forgiveness for myself when I mess up or fail.

In an attempt to encourage another friend to be bold and go forth in what he said he wanted, I found this quote.

“It is not the critic who counts, not the one who points out how the strong man stumbled or how the doer of deeds might have done better.  The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred with the sweat and dust and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again, because there is no effort without shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the good deeds;  who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who, if he wins, knows the triumph of high achievement; and who, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.”-Theodore Roosevelt

It is easy for others to sit on the sidelines and cheer or give well meaning advice or tell us the coulda/shoulda’s, but we are the ones facing the daily battles with food and whatever other crap we have in us that keeps us in the place we are in.  We are the ones that know exactly what strength it takes to resist that cupcake or ice cream or that 2nd helping of deliciousness.  We are also the ones who know when we have given in and maybe for a moment, given up in defeat.  We are the ones doing this, and we are doing this…even when we struggle we are still doing this.  No one on the sidelines is doing this for us.  Coach and Aaron do not do this for me, they cannot.  All others can do is try to encourage us and to help us along, but even then they do not and cannot know what this battle is like.

So as we head into this final week, do not quit now.  Whatever your weight is, be sure to send it in, knowing that if it is a gain, you get to go again and at the very least, I, will celebrate with you!  I will celebrate where you have come from and the great courage it has taken to get you to this point in your journey knowing from my own experience that we will all fail time and time again but eventually we will not fail anymore.

With all that said…give it up for Lina for being the biggest loser of the week with a 1.35% loss and only 4 lbs to go to meet her initial goal for this summer!!  Lina! You amaze me!!

Between Seasons Summer Challenge Wk 11 Results

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We have 2 people that made it in to the 1 % or more category, however only one of those people’s cells lit up in the victorious green color!

Lina is our Biggest Loser of the Week with a 1.07%  Woot!! Woot!!  To top it all off, if you all haven’t gone and checked out her blog, she set an initial weight loss goal of 30 lbs for this challenge.  If I understood her blog correctly last week, she is only 4 lbs away from meeting that initial goal!!!  Correct me if I am wrong Lina!  With 2 weeks left in this challenge, I am certain she will do it!  GO Lina GO!!!!

That other person who fell into the 1% or more category was me…I gained 1.02% or 3 lbs…more blogs/thoughts coming as soon as I sort them out and filter out the crazy in them.

We have 2 weeks left.  I know my head has been taken out of the game a bit by my recent visits from my crazy twin who seems to think she can visit any ole time she wants now, among other things.  But I am determined that her craziness won’t beat me.  That I am stronger than all of her antics, in the long run.  So are you guys!  Don’t give up.  Whatever it is you are struggling with, you are stronger than IT.  Coach told me in an email sometime in the last week or two to ask for help when I need it.  My friends know I am stubborn and independent and have been resisting this whole vulnerability thing a bit lately as it has felt so incredibly vulnerable.  But he is right.  I have not come this far alone and I won’t be able to go the rest of the distance alone.  I need to actually speak the words, HELP ME, when I am struggling.

So, I pass his wisdom on to you. Ask for help if you need it and finish this thing strong.

I guess I didn’t wait for a new blog to share some of my thoughts now did I?

All right already folks.  I am sure you have all been anxiously awaiting the results.  Once again I am delayed in getting this up for many reasons, but the reason I will admit and own up to is I got to GR and forgot.

The results are in and we DO have a Biggest Loser of the week.  Ladies and Gentleman….give it up for Teresa with a big ole 1.01% lost.

Several of you lost this week.  One or 2 gained and there were a few not reporting in.

I am about to give a pep talk that is really aimed at myself guys. You all just get to hear it anyway and perhaps benefit.

Do not give up.

Do not quit.

You have come too far to let whatever it is that is causing you to YIELD, to turn in to a full on STOP or PARK.

You are not finished yet.

You will likely never be FINISHED on this journey, even after you reach your goal weight.  There will always be something to work on.

This is not a diet.  This is a lifestyle change.  This is forever, so of course it is hard.

It doesn’t matter if you gained or stayed the same this week.  If you live until you are 80 you have 2496 weeks left.  One is not the end of the world.  And if you have been having a rough month you still have 576 months left to be better. (numbers based on my age of 32-should tweak it to 33 though since I am only 32 for another few weeks–but you get the idea)

All this to say…pony up!  Man up! Put your big girl pants on…and Move your A@! out of the kitchen and onto the streets or track or somewhere…just move…

Congrats Teresa!  Having read your blog you are the epitomy of not giving up and getting up again and again and again…love that about you girl!  Oh and she wants to do triathlons too!  Who doesn’t love a girl who wants to do THAT!

You guys are killing me!  Such an awesome week guys!

My spreadsheet is lit up in color all over the place.  Lots of green, which to me represents life.  With every pound lost we are all gaining back a new life.  Such exciting stuff!!

Karla!  I know you have been working hard for this and I know you have been waiting and hoping that just ONE week you would be The Biggest Loser of the week.  Well, my friend, the time is NOW for you.  Karla lost 1.38% this week.

But she had a run for this title and was followed very closely by Angela with 1.23% who also had to fight for her spot in the leader board because following her was…

Lina with 1.06% lost.

Myself and Ria were ALMOST in the green with .96% and .91% respectively.

This is fun to be able to fill this blog entry with a BUNCH of names of people who are kicking butt!

You guys rock!  Keep it up!

Oh my goodness guys!!

I am so sorry!

Our Biggest Loser of the Week last week was actually Billy with 1.16%!!

I do not know how I missed this…I mean hello!?!?  Aaron has my spreadsheet set up so when one of you loses more than 1% the color CHANGES!!!!  But somehow I missed that there was 1 bright GREEN cell that corresponded with Billy’s name!

Congrats everyone…and Billy, I apologize profusely for missing you there!  I hope you will forgive me for that oversight!

Don’t forget to send me your results for this week guys!  After this one, we only have 4 more weeks left!  Let’s finish strong!  When I run with Adam or Coach and I am getting tired near the end of a lap…they always tell me…

“Don’t slow down now! Don’t GIve Up!  Sprint it out! GO a little further thanyou think you can! You’ve got this!”

SO here is me shouting at all of you!

YOU CAN DO IT!  KEEP GOING!  SPRINT IT OUT AND FINISH STRONG!
